Schilling Test
You have been scheduled for a Schilling test, which involves the use of a small amount of radioactive material. The level of radioactivity used is extremely low and has no side effects.

Patient Preparation
The patient must be fasting for at least 6 hours before the test. No intra-muscular injections of vitamin B12 for 48 hours prior to the test.

Procedure
You will be given a capsule containing a small amount of radioactive vitamin B12.You will be asked to return in 1 hour when you will be given an intra-muscular injection of vitamin B12. You will be given a urine collection container and instructed to collect ALL of your urine in this container for the next 24 hours. You may resume eating and drinking normally after the injection. The 24 hour urine collection must be returned to this clinic at the end of the collection period.
