Thyroid Scan
  • To relate the general structure of the thyroid gland to its function.
    • may be useful in distinguishing Grave's Disease from toxic nodular goiter
  • To correlate thyroid palpatation with scintigraphic findings to determine the degree of function in a clinically-defined area or nodule.
  • To locate ectopic thyroid tissue
  • To assist in evaluation of congenital hypothyroidism
  • To evaluate a neck or substernal mass
  • To differentiate thyroiditis abd factitious hyperthyroidism from Grave's disease and other forms of hperthyroidism

Thyroid Uptake
  • Assist in determining the amount of I131 therapy to be given to treat hyperthyroidism due to Grave's disease or toxic nodular goiter
  • Differentiate subacute or painless thyroiditis and factitious hyperthyroidism from Grave's disease and other forms of hyperthyroidism
  • Assist in diagnosing hyperthyroidism
  • Uptake measurement is of limited value in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism

Parathyroid Scan

  • To localize hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue (adenomas or hyperplasia) in primary hyperparathyroidism
  • To localize hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue in patients with persistent or recurrent disease
